Have you ever felt so down that you didn’t want to approach any work? That feeling is called Apathy and is characterised by its low energy and irritating feeling.
Some have even coined the term Procrastination Depression to describe this emotional state.
More often than not, people tend to use apathy to avoid work. They fail to realize that apathy is the result of procrastination and it is not caused by the amount of work that has to be done. To prove yourself to yourself that this is true, imagine how good you’d feel if all tasks you have to do were complete already, would that feeling be there?
Of course not! It is procrastination that is causing it, so assuming that you will feel more of it during a task you’re avoiding makes no logical sense.
This realization is a first step to start beating procrastination that is caused by apathy.
The second step is to change your emotional state. Did you know that you have a high degree of control over your emotions? Did you know that it is possible to have Total Emotional Command? Do you realize that feelings are not caused by external circumstances but it is YOU who decides which feelings you want to dwell on?
Indeed, feelings are decided by people unconsciously. It is not that we are unable to control our feelings. The problem lies in the fact that many of us have not trained our attention spans and focus well enough to avoid this automatic decision making.
Now here is a big one: Do you know that you can access any emotional or mental state any time you want, even if you feel totally disconnected from it? Think of what this ability would mean to you if you could exercise it at will!
So that is the second step! Change your emotion and mental state to a more positive and productive one.
This is essential because problems are never solved from the same mental state in which they are created. You have to get out of that rut first, and it is easier than one may believe.
